A severe snowstorm caused a massive pile-up involving over 100 vehicles on Interstate 196 in Michigan, leaving motorists stranded and prompting authorities to close both directions of the highway. The treacherous conditions led to numerous crashes, including more than 30 trailer trucks, just southwest of Grand Rapids on Monday.
Michigan State Police reported multiple injuries from the incident, though none were believed to be fatal. Images and videos circulating on social media and local news outlets depicted a chaotic scene of trucks and cars piled up along the snow-covered stretch of road.
This major crash is the latest in a series of impacts from a powerful winter storm sweeping across the United States. The US National Weather Service has issued warnings for extremely cold temperatures and potential winter storms across several states, extending from northern Minnesota down to Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.

Motorist Pedro Mata Jr. recounted his experience to The Associated Press, stating he could barely see vehicles ahead while driving at 32-40 km/h (20-25 mph) just before the pile-up. After safely stopping his pick-up truck, he pulled into the median to avoid further collisions. "It was a little scary just listening to everything, the bangs and booms behind you. I saw what was in front of me. I couldn’t see what was behind me, exactly," Mata described.
Officials have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution and slow down, as the winter storm continues to dump snow and temperatures are forecast to drop to -22 degrees Celsius (-8 degrees Fahrenheit) with wind chill. Further warnings indicate freezing temperatures are possible overnight into Tuesday across parts of north-central Florida and southeast Georgia.
