Amazon has made a significant stride in the burgeoning satellite communications sector, announcing an $11.6 billion merger with satellite operator Globalstar and a crucial agreement with Apple. This dual announcement positions Amazon's Leo network, formerly Kuiper Systems, as a primary satellite service provider for iPhone and Apple Watch devices. The integration of Globalstar, which already partners with Apple for satellite messaging on recent iPhone models, will enable Amazon to enter the direct-to-device (D2D) market, offering emergency services, messaging, and location sharing features for current and future Apple devices.

The acquisition of Globalstar and subsequent collaboration with Apple are part of Amazon's broader strategy to solidify its presence in the competitive satellite connectivity landscape, currently dominated by SpaceX's Starlink. While Starlink boasts a larger existing D2D satellite constellation, Amazon plans to deploy over 3,000 Leo satellites, with a new D2D system slated for 2028. This initiative promises advanced voice, data, and messaging services for mobile phones, ensuring Apple users maintain vital connectivity even off-grid. The merger is anticipated to close by 2027, paving the way for Amazon's ambitious satellite endeavors.
