Canon Unveils Limited Edition G7 X III Camera to Celebrate 30 Years of Digital Photography Revolution

In a move that honors its rich history and pioneering spirit in digital imaging, Canon has officially unveiled a special Limited Edition of its highly acclaimed PowerShot G7 X Mark III compact camera. This commemorative release marks the 30th anniversary of the original PowerShot camera, which launched in 1996 and played a pivotal role in igniting the digital photography revolution with its then-groundbreaking 0.5-megapixel sensor.

The introduction of the first PowerShot camera was more than just a technological milestone; it was a paradigm shift that laid the foundation for the future of photography. Now, three decades later, Canon is reflecting on this journey by introducing a refined iteration of one of its most popular cameras, the G7 X III, infused with elements of heritage and premium design.

The new Limited Edition model boasts a sophisticated "graphite" colorway, lending the camera a modern yet distinguished aesthetic. Complementing this, the front control ring features a new knurled texture, meticulously designed to evoke a sense of "luxury and quality" in hand, as stated by Canon. Further enhancing its collector appeal, the camera body is adorned with a 30th-anniversary logo, creating a unique and special feeling befitting a limited edition release. Canon described this touch as "to create a special feeling suitable for limited edition models," embodying their characteristic thoughtful approach.

Since its initial release nearly seven years ago, the PowerShot G7 X Mark III has established itself as a leader in its class, particularly among content creators and aspiring photographers. It was among the first cameras specifically marketed towards vloggers, largely due to its capability to shoot vertical video, a crucial feature for platforms like Instagram. Its appeal extends beyond this, however, with a robust feature set including a 20.1MP sensor, a 3-inch flip-up touchscreen, a versatile 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 zoom lens, and a dedicated microphone input for superior audio quality.

In terms of video capabilities, the camera supports uncropped 4K video recording at 30 frames per second and Full HD at 120 fps for smooth slow-motion footage. Arguably its most revolutionary feature at the time of its launch was the ability to stream directly to YouTube over Wi-Fi – a capability that was novel for compact cameras then and has since become a common expectation.

Upon its initial debut, the G7 X III was priced at $749. Although it experienced periods of limited availability, its popularity surged, especially among influencers and content creators. This demand led to used models fetching prices significantly above the original retail price. Perhaps inspired by this sustained viral fame, Canon announced in August 2025 its intention to increase production. Consequently, the G7 X III began returning to stock a few months later, with an adjusted retail price of $880.

The new Limited Edition G7 X III is positioned at a higher price point of $1,299, but it offers tangible added value beyond its exclusive finish. The package includes not only the camera but also a limited edition Peak Design cuff wrist strap and a 32GB SD card, enhancing its appeal as a complete creative kit. Shipping for this special edition is slated to commence in April 2026, offering photography enthusiasts a unique opportunity to own a piece of Canon's legacy.

Canon's announcement wasn't limited to the G7 X III special edition. The company also introduced a pair of compelling new full-frame RF-mount lenses. The first is the RF 14mm f/1.4 L VCM prime lens, an ultra-wide-angle option priced at $2,599, promising exceptionally bright and high-quality optics. The second is the intriguing $1,899 RF7-14mm f/2.8-3.5 L Fisheye STM zoom lens, which offers an expansive field of view up to 190 degrees at its widest setting, opening up new creative possibilities for photographers.

This multifaceted announcement underscores Canon's keen understanding of the evolving photography market and its ability to cater to diverse user needs, from seasoned professionals to mobile content creators. The celebration of 30 years of digital photography innovation through a special edition of an iconic camera highlights Canon's ongoing commitment to shaping the future of imaging.
