Ethan Brown: From Heartland Champion to Cyclo-cross World Stage

In the heartland of Indiana, a region known more for its vast cornfields and high-octane motorsports than for cycling prowess, Ethan Brown has emerged as a beacon of talent in the demanding world of cyclo-cross. At just 17 years old, Brown captured the prestigious US Junior Cyclo-cross National Championship, capping off a breakout season that saw him achieve international recognition and set his sights on an even brighter future.

Brown's journey into cycling wasn't a direct path. Growing up near Indianapolis, a hub for IndyCar and NASCAR, his initial athletic pursuits were diverse, including soccer, baseball, gymnastics, and even a brief stint in breakdancing. However, a simple red bicycle and an introduction to junior triathlon races sparked a burgeoning passion. This led him to the Major Taylor Velodrome, a place that became a crucial stepping stone. It was there, amidst the sounds of pedal strokes and the thrill of speed, that he discovered cyclo-cross, a discipline that perfectly blended his need for speed with a love for challenging terrain.

His early forays into cyclo-cross began at the Major Taylor Cross Cup and local races, where as a 10-year-old, he was finishing outside the top 35. Yet, the experience laid the foundation for future success. Fast forward several years, and Brown transformed from a young participant into the US men's 17-18 junior national champion, a testament to his dedication and growth.

The 2023-2024 season marked a significant turning point for the Indiana native. He secured six regular-season victories across the United States, claimed the runner-up position in both the US Cyclocross Series and the Pan-American Cyclo-cross Championships for the junior men's category. His ambitions extended beyond domestic borders, culminating in his first top-20 finish at a World Cup event in Flamanville, France. Continuing his impressive trajectory into the new calendar year, Brown finished as the top US junior male rider at the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Hulst, Netherlands, securing an impressive 16th place.

As the cyclo-cross season wound down with the approach of spring, Brown returned to his studies at Hamilton Southeastern High School to complete his junior year. Now finished with junior racing, he shared his aspirations with Cyclingnews, detailing his planned transition to the U23 division. Brown expressed admiration for Dutch rider Tibor Del Grosso, a 22-year-old silver medalist in the elite division at the recent World Championships, seeing him as a model for his own development. He also outlined his next steps for continuing his education alongside his burgeoning cycling career.

Reflecting on his journey, Brown highlighted his deep appreciation for the technical skills inherent in cyclo-cross. "I think I love all the bike skills you learn in cyclo-cross," he stated. "I have always been one to love a good challenge, and cyclo-cross always seemed to provide that for me." He fondly recalled a personal goal from his younger years at the Trek CX Cup: successfully riding up the log steps, a feat that symbolizes the progression he has made.

The breakout performances this season were bolstered by intensive training camps, including those with EuroCrossAcademy in Montana. However, Brown emphasized that the camaraderie and support system are equally crucial. "My favorite highlight of the last couple years is the training camps we do every year at my teammate's cabin in Brown County, Indiana," he shared. "We camp, have a fire, build trails and jumps, and ride lots of miles on the gravel of Hoosier National Forest." This sense of community, built around shared passion and mutual support, is a driving force behind his success. The national championship victory remains a profound highlight, a culmination of years of focused training and dedication.

Competing at the Cyclo-cross Worlds in Hulst was a particularly special experience, amplified by the presence of his family. "My mom, sister, and aunt were all in Hulst this year for Worlds - I knew my mom was coming but my sister and aunt actually surprised me," Brown revealed. The outpouring of support, both in person and from afar via social media, underscored the strong network surrounding him. While maintaining race-day focus is paramount, Brown appreciated the opportunity to absorb the crowd's energy post-race. He noted the distinct atmosphere of European cyclo-cross events, describing the crowds as significantly more 'hyped' than those typically seen in the US, a phenomenon he genuinely enjoys.

When asked about role models, Brown initially looked up to older riders on his development team. Now, he identifies with Tibor Del Grosso, admiring his composed and controlled riding style. "When I watch him ride, he seems very calm and in control, and like his bike is just a part of him," Brown observed. This focused demeanor and apparent mastery of the bike are qualities he aspires to emulate.

As he prepares to transition to the U23 category, Brown acknowledges the increased challenge but embraces it with enthusiasm. "Moving up to U23 is going to be a challenge, but like I said before, I love a good challenge. I really feel like I am ready for this next step." While specific goals are yet to be defined, a consultation with his coach is imminent. Brown remains committed to his development path with Midwest NXT, poised for continued success on the international cyclo-cross circuit.
