Google has announced a significant upgrade to its Chrome web browser, integrating powerful artificial intelligence capabilities through a new feature called "Skills." This innovation allows users to save and re-deploy their most frequently used AI prompts, automating repetitive tasks across various web pages without the need for re-typing. This move positions Chrome at the forefront of AI-driven browser technology, especially amidst a competitive landscape where companies like OpenAI and Perplexity are also pushing AI integrations.

Building upon the existing Gemini AI integration within Chrome, "Skills" elevates the user experience by enabling the creation of personalized AI workflows. For instance, a user who often asks Gemini to suggest vegan substitutions for recipes can now save this prompt as a "Skill." This saved "Skill" can then be accessed with a simple command (typing a forward slash '/' or clicking the '+' button) and applied across different recipe websites. The AI will execute the prompt on the current page and potentially other selected tabs. Google is also introducing a "Skills" library, offering pre-made workflows for common tasks in areas such as productivity, shopping, and budgeting. These can be added to a user's saved skills and customized as needed. The feature will initially roll out to desktop Chrome users with their browser language set to English (US), marking a significant step in making AI more accessible and integrated into daily browsing habits.
