Riot Games has announced a significant update for its enduring MOBA, League of Legends, with the official rollout of WASD controls. This alternative input method, allowing players to navigate the game world using their keyboard instead of the standard point-and-click mouse control, is set to be enabled for ranked matches in patch 26.9. The studio initially revealed its pursuit of WASD support last August, emphasizing a commitment to ensuring the new scheme did not offer a competitive advantage over the existing one. Riot Games stated its goal was to maintain a minimal win-loss rate difference between the control options before making it available to the broader player base.

"There's still a small delta in the win-rates between the control schemes, with Point and Click having a minor advantage," according to a recent developer log detailing the feature. "We expect that difference will decrease over time as players gain more mastery with WASD, but we will continue to monitor this stat in the future." The update also introduces further accessibility improvements, such as custom inputs for mouse cursor movement and enhanced keybinding flexibility. While Riot has clarified that official controller support is not being added, players will have the capability to utilize WASD controls in conjunction with a joystick, broadening the options for input customization.
