Microsoft is implementing notable price hikes on its Surface line of personal computers, a move directly attributed to escalating costs in memory and essential components. This pricing adjustment has become effective on the official Microsoft Store, with a broader rollout anticipated across other retail channels in the near future. The increases are substantial; for example, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 7, initially launched in 2024 at $1,300, now begins at $1,600. This follows a previous price adjustment last year to $1,500, making the current increase an additional $100. High-end configurations, such as a Surface Laptop 7 equipped with a Snapdragon X Elite processor, 64GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD, now command a price of $3,650. This positions it less favorably compared to a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro chip, 64GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD, which retails for $3,300 and offers superior performance.
The Surface Pro series of hybrid devices is also subject to these price increases. The 12-inch Surface Pro now starts at $1,050, a significant jump from its original $800 launch price. The flagship 13-inch Surface Pro, which was available for $1,000 in 2024, now starts at $1,500, representing a $500 increase over two years, despite a modest upgrade in base storage capacity. Microsoft has officially stated that these changes are due to "recent increases in memory and component costs." Industry observers suggest that these new price points are likely to persist unless component costs decline. This trend is not isolated to Microsoft; other manufacturers have also adjusted prices due to similar supply chain pressures, impacting everything from smartphones to gaming consoles.
