Researchers have announced an "astonishing" discovery of a previously unknown species of bacteria found in patients with noma, a deadly and disfiguring childhood disease. This breakthrough could be key to developing new treatments and better ways to prevent and detect the neglected tropical condition. Noma, fatal in 90% of untreated cases, begins as a gum sore and rapidly destroys the tissues of the mouth and face. It predominantly affects young, poor, and malnourished children, often referred to as the "face of poverty," leaving survivors with severe lifelong scarring.
The research, led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, involved studying bacterial communities in the mouths of 19 Nigerian children with noma. Modern genetic analysis revealed a disturbed microbial environment, characterized by lower levels of healthy bacteria and a significant increase in other strains. Crucially, a previously undescribed species of Treponema bacteria, now termed Treponema A, was identified in most noma patient samples. While the exact causal link remains under investigation, Professor Adam Roberts, a senior author, expressed hope that detecting Treponema A at the gingivitis stage could enable prophylactic antibiotic treatment to halt disease progression.

Professor Roberts emphasized that a larger study is needed to confirm whether Treponema A causes noma or merely colonizes existing wounds. He also highlighted that current broad-spectrum antibiotic treatments risk increasing antimicrobial resistance, suggesting that a targeted treatment for this specific bacteria could mitigate that threat. The study, which also involved researchers from the University of Liverpool and Médecins Sans Frontières, was published in Plos Neglected Tropical Diseases.
