HENDERSON, Nev. – The Las Vegas Raiders' strategic preparations for the 2026 NFL Draft are intensifying, with widespread speculation pointing towards quarterback Fernando Mendoza as their likely first overall selection. Despite this strong internal leaning, General Manager John Spytek revealed at a recent predraft news conference that the team has received several inquiries from other franchises interested in trading for the coveted No. 1 pick. Spytek, known for his pragmatic approach, acknowledged his openness to compelling offers, particularly those that might materialize closer to draft night.
However, Spytek emphasized that the Raiders' ultimate decision hinges on their conviction regarding a specific player. "If there's a player that stands out that we feel it's not worth losing, it's not worth even picking up the phone, then we'll just make the pick," he stated. Mendoza, if selected, would mark the 30th quarterback taken first overall in the common draft era and the fourth consecutive year a signal-caller has topped the draft board. His arrival would set the stage for a competitive quarterback room alongside newly signed veteran Kirk Cousins and incumbent Aidan O'Connell. Both Spytek and head coach Klint Kubiak ideally prefer a rookie to develop behind an experienced player, yet they maintain a meritocratic stance: the best player will ultimately lead the team on the field. The challenges of transitioning a young quarterback, particularly those unfamiliar with traditional huddle mechanics and under-center play, remain a key consideration for the coaching staff.
