Early Week Mix of Light Precipitation and Dry Air Dominates South Korean Weather Forecast, Fire Risk Elevated

South Korea is set to experience a varied weather outlook for the upcoming week, with forecasts indicating a possibility of light snow or rain across various regions at the start of the period. This initial unsettled weather is expected to gradually give way to clearer skies as the week progresses. However, a persistent concern remains the increasingly dry atmospheric conditions, which are elevating the risk of wildfires. Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution.

According to the national meteorological agency, the week of December 16th to 20th will commence with cloudy skies dominating much of the country on Monday, December 16th. While most areas will experience significant cloud cover, a gradual clearing is anticipated from the afternoon onwards. Notably, the eastern parts of Gangwon Province, the eastern coastal regions of Gyeongsang Province, and Jeju Island are expected to remain predominantly cloudy.

By Tuesday, December 17th, a shift towards clearer weather is forecast for the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province. Other regions across the nation will likely start the day with overcast conditions, but are expected to see increasing cloudiness diminishing as the morning progresses, leading to clearer skies.

Temperatures throughout the week are projected to range from a low of -7 degrees Celsius in the mornings to a high of 9 degrees Celsius during the day. Daytime high temperatures are expected to fall between 4 and 17 degrees Celsius. These figures are generally consistent with or slightly above the seasonal averages, which typically see morning lows between -6 and 3 degrees Celsius and afternoon highs between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius.

Despite the relatively mild temperature forecasts, the warning regarding dry air conditions remains a critical issue. The low humidity levels across the country create a highly flammable environment. Earlier in December, regions like Gangwon Province experienced snowfall, with images captured on December 13th showing accumulated snow in the Seoraksan National Park area. While visually striking, these weather phenomena, combined with dry air, heighten the potential for fire outbreaks.

National agencies, including the Meteorological Administration and civil defense authorities, are emphasizing the importance of vigilance. Residents are strongly advised to exercise extreme care when using open flames and to ensure all fires are completely extinguished. Fire safety guidelines also include avoiding the ignition of fires in forests or areas prone to rapid fire spread. Fire departments are reportedly on heightened alert to respond effectively to any emergencies.

This weather advisory comes amidst a broader pattern of increasingly volatile weather events globally, with South Korea, like many nations, experiencing more extreme atmospheric conditions. Dry spells and increased fire risks are recurring challenges, particularly during the winter months when natural moisture levels tend to be lower.

The Meteorological Administration continues to closely monitor the evolving weather patterns and will provide regular updates to ensure the public remains informed. The agency reiterates the importance of adhering to official weather reports and following guidance from relevant authorities to maintain public safety.
