Ubisoft Appoints Three Assassin's Creed Veterans to Helm Franchise at New Vantage Studios

In a significant strategic move designed to bolster the future of one of the world's most successful video game franchises, industry giant Ubisoft has announced the appointment of three of its most experienced Assassin's Creed developers to lead the franchise at its newly formed subsidiary, Vantage Studios. This studio, recently established with backing from Tencent, represents a cornerstone in Ubisoft's future plans for the iconic series.

This leadership reinforcement within the Assassin's Creed brand brings Martin Schelling, Jean Guesdon, and François de Billy to the forefront. According to a recent company blog post, this trio will "play a pivotal role" in shaping the franchise's long-term vision, driving its creative ambition, and ensuring its continued growth for years to come.

Martin Schelling, who has been named as the Head of the Assassin's Creed brand, will be responsible for the overall strategy and long-term vision of the brand. Schelling is no stranger to Ubisoft, having previously served as the company's Chief Production Officer. Prior to that, he spent 17 years overseeing numerous Assassin's Creed titles in various production capacities, contributing to the success of landmark games such as Assassin's Creed Revelations, Black Flag, Origins, and Valhalla.

Jean Guesdon will assume the role of Head of Content for the brand. His responsibilities will include guiding the overall direction of the franchise, supporting individual game development, and steering "the future of Assassin's Creed while staying true to its core DNA." Guesdon possesses a deep history with the series, dating back to his work as a designer on the original Assassin's Creed game in 2007. However, he is perhaps best known for his tenure as the Creative Director for the critically acclaimed Origins and Black Flag titles.

François de Billy is set to take on the position of Head of Production Excellence for the brand. His primary objective will be to "strengthen production practices and execution across the brand." Like Schelling and Guesdon, de Billy is a veteran developer, having previously served as a Production Director on both Valhalla and Origins. He is also recognized internally for his ability to "optimize processes and remove friction across complex production workflows," making him a valuable asset to the leadership team.

Ubisoft highlighted that these three leaders have collaborated closely on multiple flagship Assassin's Creed games throughout the years, spanning creative, production, and brand strategy. Their transition into these new leadership roles is expected to occur over the next few weeks. They will formally join the Assassin's Creed leadership team alongside Andrée-Anne Boisvert, Producer for Assassin's Creed's cross-brand initiatives and Head of Technological Excellence, and Lionel Hiller, VP Brand and Go-to-Market Strategy. Together, they are poised to steer the brand's ambitious new chapter.

These appointments arrive at a crucial juncture for the Assassin's Creed franchise. Ubisoft is currently developing new titles, including Assassin's Creed Hexe and Assassin's Creed Jade, the latter being the franchise's first open-world entry designed specifically for iOS and Android platforms. Furthermore, rumors continue to swirl regarding a potential remake of Assassin's Creed Black Flag, reportedly codenamed "Resynced." These leaks surface amidst reports of the cancellation of a four-player co-op game, initially conceived as multiplayer DLC for Assassin's Creed Shadows, attributed to Ubisoft's broader restructuring efforts.

These strategic maneuvers underscore Ubisoft's commitment to revitalizing and guiding the Assassin's Creed series toward a dynamic future, leveraging internal expertise to preserve the franchise's core identity while pushing the boundaries of innovation. The establishment of Vantage Studios and the appointment of these veteran developers signify a substantial investment in the enduring legacy and continued success of this iconic gaming brand.
