A United States federal court has blocked the administration of former President Donald Trump from deporting Hayam El Gamal and her five children, who were re-arrested just days after their release from immigration detention. The family, with children aged five to 18, had been held for 10 months—the longest known detention for any family during Trump’s second term—before a judge ordered their release earlier this week. However, shortly after returning to their Colorado home, immigration authorities again detained the family on Saturday, seeking their swift deportation, according to their lawyer.
The family's lawyers stated that this attempt violates a federal court order from the Western District of Texas, which had instructed authorities not to detain or remove the family from the United States. US District Judge Fred Biery, who initially ordered the family’s release on Thursday, granted an emergency order on Saturday barring their removal. Lawyers and several lawmakers have described the family's nearly yearlong detention as an illegal and cruel effort to punish them for an act they did not commit, as they have not been charged with any crimes.

The family was detained after Hayam El Gamal's former husband, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, attacked a group of people in Boulder, Colorado, in June 2025, an incident that led to the death of an 82-year-old woman. Soliman’s family condemned the attack and denied prior knowledge, and El Gamal reportedly divorced him soon after his arrest. An FBI agent also testified under oath that there was no evidence the family was aware of the father’s plan. The White House had previously expressed intent to expel the family, who are reportedly applying for asylum after arriving from Egypt on tourist visas. The family has also experienced deteriorating health and been denied proper medical care during their detention.
