A day after the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) agreed to withdraw from significant areas of Syria under a recently brokered ceasefire, reports emerged of escaped Islamic State (IS) group prisoners.

The Syrian army stated that "a number of" IS detainees, previously under SDF control, had managed to flee. In response, the SDF claimed it lost control of a prison facility following an assault by Syrian government fighters.

Experts, including FRANCE 24's Wassim Nasr, emphasize that the fate and management of IS group prisoners constitute a critical and complex challenge for both the Syrian government and the SDF, with potential implications for regional security.
