MTS, a leading telecommunications provider in Russia, has launched an innovative initiative designed to facilitate consumer upgrades to newer technology. The program allows customers to exchange their old devices, such as smartwatches and smart speakers, for new ones by receiving an additional discount on their purchase. This initiative operates on a classic 'trade-in' model, where customers bring their used devices to an MTS store. The device's condition and model are then assessed to determine the discount applicable to any new purchase.
This program offers significant value to consumers. For instance, when purchasing a flagship smartphone, like a new Samsung model, the discount can reach up to 15,000 Russian rubles. MTS accepts a wide array of devices from popular brands including Apple, Samsung, and Huawei, covering 126 different models. Additionally, the program includes 14 models of smart speakers, primarily from the Russian tech company Yandex.

According to the company, the program has gained considerable traction since its introduction. Huawei smartwatches have emerged as the most frequently traded-in devices, accounting for nearly half of all devices submitted, followed by Samsung devices in second place. This strong customer response highlights the demand for accessing the latest technology while leveraging the value of older gadgets. It also contributes to the electronic waste reduction by encouraging the reuse and recycling of devices.
The program aims not only to boost sales of new devices for MTS but also to provide an economically viable and practical solution for consumers keen on staying abreast of rapid technological advancements. This approach further underscores MTS's commitment to the principles of a circular economy by promoting device refurbishment and reuse.
