A Decade On: Michael Mronz Affirms Guido Westerwelle's Enduring Faith in FDP's Future

Ten years after the death of former FDP chairman and Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, his life partner Michael Mronz looks back at his legacy and the current state of the party. Mronz expressed conviction that Westerwelle would still firmly believe in the future of the liberals today – a belief that resonates particularly strongly given the FDP's recent political setbacks. Mronz shared this assessment in an interview with the "Rheinische Post," where he compared the FDP's unique resilience to that of the Christian church: "There are two institutions that have experience with resurrection. These are the Christian church and the FDP. Seen in this light, one should always keep faith in it."

Guido Westerwelle, who succumbed to the consequences of a leukemia illness on March 18, 2016, shaped the FDP for over a decade as its chairman and served Germany as Federal Foreign Minister under Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). His political legacy is closely intertwined with the rise and challenges of the FDP. The party is currently in an existential crisis, manifested in weak poll numbers of only three to four percent and recent electoral defeats. In particular, the failure to enter the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg last Sunday, a traditional stronghold of the liberals, underscores the dramatic situation and the "struggle for survival" in which the FDP currently finds itself. The concern about failing the five-percent hurdle again in future elections, especially the 2025 Bundestag election, is palpable.

Mronz paints a picture of a politician who did not let his convictions depend on external currents. "His compass was: If others move away from us, we don't chase after them, and if others move towards us, we don't run away," Mronz quotes Westerwelle's stance. This adherence to principles, based on a clear liberal stance, is more important today than ever. Westerwelle was considered a brilliant speaker, whose strength lay in the precise articulation of complex issues. His widower laments the absence of such personalities in today's political landscape: "I have the impression that many people in this country today lack politicians who clearly articulate the problems of our time from the center and thereby also convince voters who gather in protest on the right and left fringes." This is a clear appeal to parties to once again rely on convincing personalities who can address the broad middle of society, instead of remaining stuck in polarizing debates.

Westerwelle's legacy also lives on through the Westerwelle Foundation, of which Michael Mronz is now Chairman of the Board. The foundation, launched by Westerwelle in 2013, is committed to promoting entrepreneurship in Africa, a cause close to the heart of the former foreign minister. It reflects his belief in the power of self-initiative and the importance of global partnerships. The foundation works to support young entrepreneurs on the African continent, providing them with the tools for sustainable growth, thereby continuing Westerwelle's vision of a connected and prosperous world.

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his death, a commemorative event is planned for March 18, which will be dedicated to the central theme of democracy. According to Mronz, high-ranking personalities from politics and society are expected, including Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) and Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU). The choice of the theme "Democracy" is particularly relevant in the current era, where democratic values and institutions are under global pressure. It provides a platform to discuss the challenges of liberal democracy and to honor Westerwelle's contribution to its strengthening. The event will not only be a remembrance of a significant statesman but also an opportunity to revive his political ideals and his unwavering optimism for the future of liberals and democracy itself.

Mronz's words resonate at a time when the FDP is desperately seeking direction. His reference to Westerwelle's unconditional belief in the party's "resurrection" can be understood as both a warning and a motivation: a warning not to abandon core liberal values, and a motivation to fight with determination and a clear message to win the trust of voters. Thus, the legacy of Guido Westerwelle, his steadfastness and his unwavering optimism, remains an important point of reference for the FDP on its path out of the crisis.
