A2 Near Dortmund: Five-Day Full Closure Due to Urgent Bridge Renovation – Massive Traffic Disruptions Expected
The A2, one of the central traffic arteries in the heart of the Ruhr area and a main lifeline of European transit traffic, faces a five-day full closure starting this coming Thursday evening, which will have significant impacts on commuters and long-distance traffic. Between the Dortmund Nordost interchange and the Dortmund-Nordwest triangle, the carriageway in the direction of Oberhausen will be completely shut down for urgently needed bridge work. This measure, ordered by the federal Autobahn GmbH, is scheduled from 9:00 PM on Thursday until 5:00 AM on the following Monday, aiming to ensure the structural integrity of an essential piece of infrastructure.
At the core of the renovation work is the 85-meter-long bridge over the Dortmund-Ems Canal, which was constructed back in 1979. A spokesperson for the Westfalen branch of Autobahn GmbH explained the necessity of this extensive measure: over the past decades, the structure has suffered massively under the exponentially increased traffic load. Particularly the continuously rising volume of heavy goods vehicles on this crucial route for freight transport has taken its toll on the construction, leaving its mark. To ensure the bridge can continue to be used safely until its planned replacement – which is not expected to begin before the next decade – additional steel plates must now be welded on. These reinforcements are intended to significantly increase the stability of the structure and secure its load-bearing capacity for the coming years.

The full closure is unavoidable for technical reasons. Welding work on such a structure requires absolute stillness and precision. Any vibrations caused by flowing traffic could impair the quality of the welds and jeopardize the safety of the repair. Therefore, complete traffic freedom during the work is essential to ensure the safety of the workers and the longevity of the measures carried out.
The impact of this closure on traffic flow is expected to be considerable. The A2 is not only an important connection for regional traffic in the eastern Ruhr area but also a key route for national and international freight and passenger transport. Autobahn GmbH has therefore developed detailed diversion strategies to minimize disruption as much as possible.
For traffic wishing to use the A2 in the eastbound direction, a wide-ranging detour is recommended starting from the Kamener Kreuz interchange. This route leads via the A1 to the Westhofener Kreuz and from there via the A45 back to the A2. This route is intended to help bypass major congestion points and distribute traffic onto more efficient alternative routes. For the urban area of Dortmund, specific detours have also been set up from the Dortmund Nordost interchange to guide local traffic as efficiently as possible through the city area and avoid overloading the main diversion routes.
Long-distance traffic, especially heavy goods vehicles, is asked to use even more extensive alternatives. A recommended route leads via the A30 and A31 to reach Oberhausen over a wide area. This extensive detour aims to prevent long-distance traffic from getting stuck in regional bottlenecks and instead guide it onto motorways with sufficient capacity. Motorists and haulage companies are urgently requested to inform themselves about the current traffic situation before starting their journey and to plan for additional travel time. Traffic information services and navigation systems should be followed particularly closely during this period.

This measure once again underscores the challenges facing German infrastructure. Many bridges and motorway sections built in the post-war decades are now reaching or exceeding their designed lifespan and urgently need renovation or replacement. The A2 bridge over the Dortmund-Ems Canal is a striking example of this. While the upcoming work represents a short-term solution to secure functionality, the long-term new construction remains an urgent task for transport policy in the coming years and decades to ensure the future viability of Germany's transport routes.
