Apple has deployed iOS 26.4.2, a crucial security update aimed at rectifying a significant flaw that previously permitted law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, to view deleted push notifications on user devices. This vulnerability, which circumvented Apple's stringent privacy policies, particularly since 2023 when court orders became mandatory for notification data sharing, has been a point of concern for privacy advocates. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) highlighted how such exploits undermine user data protection.
According to Apple's official release notes, the new update introduces "improved data redaction" to resolve an issue where "notifications marked for deletion could be unexpectedly retained on the device." This fix is available for a range of devices, including iPhone 11 and later models, various iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad, and iPad mini generations. Signal CEO Meredith Whitaker had previously acknowledged the issue, urging Apple to address the persistence of deleted message notifications in the OS database, a call now answered with this timely patch. Signal expressed satisfaction with Apple's swift action.
