Tudhope's Bronze Adds to Australia's Winter Paralympic Haul
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Australian snowboarder Ben Tudhope has clinched a bronze medal in the men's banked slalom SB-LL2 event at the Winter Paralympic Games in Cortina. This latest podium finish solidifies Tudhope's status as Australia's sole medalist at the current Games, impressively adding to the silver he secured in the snowboard cross discipline just last week.
The 26-year-old athlete navigated the challenging banked slalom course with precision, finishing behind Italy's Emanuel Perathoner, who had also claimed gold in the snowboard cross, and Switzerland's Fabrice von Gruenigen. This bronze medal represents Tudhope's first Paralympic medal in the banked slalom event and marks a significant personal milestone, as it is the first time he has achieved podium success in two different disciplines at a single Winter Paralympics.

Reflecting on his performance, Tudhope shared his exhilaration: "Today was fun. The pressure was off. The expectation of medalling was off and it’s fun going out there and being a contender and fighting for the podium." He revealed a deeper layer to his competitive mindset, stating, "I always think to myself, I never tell this to anyone… that banked slalom is my second event. I think I’m a border cross specialist and then bank slalom is just something I do on the side. So to be able to come here and perform and get this medal is absolutely insane, especially with the riding going on today."
While Tudhope acknowledged that he hadn't executed a "perfect run," he expressed immense satisfaction with his performance, describing himself as "stoked" with the result. He elaborated, "I wish I could have been absolutely stoked with myself, but to still be good enough to put the time down to… medal and be able to perform at that high level. I’m stoked." This sentiment highlights his high personal standards while celebrating a significant achievement.
Tudhope's success at these Games follows his previous accomplishment at the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympics, where he was also Australia's sole medalist, earning a bronze in snowboard cross. His journey in the Paralympic movement began at the tender age of 14 when he made his debut at the Sochi Games in 2014. This current competition marks his fourth Paralympic Games, a testament to his enduring dedication and athletic longevity. His significant role extended beyond competition, as he was also chosen as one of Australia's flag bearers during the opening ceremony last week, a moment of national pride.
Comparing the current course to previous experiences, Tudhope noted the improved conditions: "This course has been amazing. I think everyone was stoked up there compared to Beijing. Gosh, that was one of my worst performances in that four-year cycle. So in the back of my head, I definitely wanted to be able to put on the show here and that’s what I did." This reflection underscores his drive for redemption and his ability to perform under pressure.
