The administration of Chile's new far-right President José Antonio Kast has announced plans to reverse the expropriation of 117 hectares of land at the former Colonia Dignidad, a site notorious for torture and human rights abuses during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship. This land was intended to become a memorial and a center for investigating crimes against humanity. The previous government of Gabriel Boric had decreed the expropriation last year, aiming to create a space for remembrance and the search for truth regarding the disappeared.

Human rights advocates, including Margarita Romero of the Asociación por la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos Colonia Dignidad, have expressed deep dismay. Romero, whose sister was detained at the site, stated that Colonia Dignidad must be recognized as a place where crimes against humanity occurred, emphasizing the need for material conditions that support the pursuit of truth and justice. The current government cites financial concerns, with Housing Minister Iván Poduje claiming the expropriation would cost over $50 million, a figure disputed by critics who point to the lack of substantiating evidence. This reversal leaves the future of the site, once led by former Nazi Paul Schäfer and used as a clandestine detention center, uncertain, with descendants of settlers and local families retaining ownership.
