Mental Health: A Core Pillar for Human Quality of Life and Stability, Says Egypt's Health Ministry

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, affirmed that mental health is an integral part of human quality of life and overall stability. He emphasized that achieving individual and societal well-being cannot be separated from prioritizing mental health. These significant statements were made in the context of the Ministry's observation of increasing community awareness regarding the importance of seeking specialized psychological support, a trend reflected in recent figures from health services provided to citizens, signaling a positive shift in societal perception towards mental health issues.

Dr. Abdel Ghaffar added that this positive interaction reflects diligent efforts undertaken by the Ministry over the past years to break down the stigma associated with mental disorders and encourage individuals to seek help without hesitation. He noted that the Ministry operates under a comprehensive national strategy aimed at integrating mental health services within the primary healthcare system and expanding their reach to include all segments of society, driven by the belief that mental health is a fundamental right for every citizen.

Record Call Volumes Reflect Growing Public Awareness and Trust in Mental Health Support Services

During his intervention on the "Studio Extra" program broadcast on Extra News channel, Dr. Abdel Ghaffar revealed striking statistics for the Ministry of Health and Population's mental health hotline, underscoring the increasing demand for this vital service. The hotline recorded an average of 50,787 calls per month for specialized psychological consultations, indicating the urgent need for professional support in facing various psychological challenges. Additionally, the hotline received 5,383 emergency calls requiring immediate intervention, highlighting its pivotal role in addressing acute mental health crises.

The official spokesperson clarified that the total calls received by the hotline since its development in 2020 until mid-2024 reached approximately 134,863 calls, varying between in-depth psychological consultations, inquiries about available services, and critical emergency cases. These figures are not just statistics; they are strong indicators of growing public trust in this service and increasing awareness of mental health as an indispensable part of overall well-being, prompting the Ministry to continue developing and expanding these services.

Comprehensive and Confidential Service: 24/7 Immediate Support with Highest Privacy Standards

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar stressed that the service provided via the hotline is characterized by the highest degrees of privacy and speed. These are essential factors in creating a safe and encouraging environment for individuals to seek help without hesitation or fear of social stigma. The hotline team comprises a constellation of specialists, numbering between 80 to 90 individuals, including qualified psychiatrists, psychologists, behavioral therapists, and experienced supervisors, all working diligently to provide effective and scientifically-based support.

He pointed out that this vital service is managed with high efficiency through a centrally equipped operations room, located at Abbassia Mental Health Hospital, one of the largest and most reputable specialized hospitals in the region. This room operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without interruption, to ensure immediate and continuous support for citizens at any time and under all circumstances, reflecting the Ministry's commitment to providing a comprehensive mental health safety net for the community.

Future Outlook: Digital Expansion and Advanced Infrastructure to Enhance Mental Health Services

As part of the Ministry's vision for continuous development and enhancement of health services, Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar unveiled ambitious future plans aimed at expanding the number of personnel working on the hotline to meet the increasing demand for the service and reduce waiting times. The plans also include developing the hotline's infrastructure by updating technical systems and providing the latest tools to ensure the efficiency and continuity of the service at the highest possible quality.

Development was not limited to the hotline alone but extended to include the launch of the "Electronic Mental Health Platform" in 2022, in close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). This platform represents a qualitative and advanced step towards digitizing mental health support services, allowing citizens to receive direct psychological support and remote virtual sessions, significantly broadening the scope of access to the service, especially for residents in remote areas or those who prefer to receive support from their homes. The platform also includes rich and diverse awareness content that contributes to spreading awareness about mental health and its various issues, in addition to specialized presidential initiatives, such as initiatives supporting "Autism" patients and programs for treating "electronic gaming addiction," reflecting the state's commitment to addressing contemporary mental health issues and providing comprehensive and innovative solutions for citizens.
