Doha —
FIFA has imposed a five-match suspension on Qatar national team midfielder Assim Madibo. The decision follows a reckless tackle on Canadian player Ismael Kone, which resulted in a broken leg requiring immediate surgery. FIFA's Disciplinary Committee issued a statement on Wednesday, confirming the sanction against Madibo, who received a direct red card during a 2026 World Cup qualifier match between Canada and Qatar.

Injury Details and Sanction Enforcement
Madibo had already served an automatic one-match suspension stemming from the red card, during Qatar's 1-3 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle. His ill-judged challenge from behind brought down Kone, the Sassuolo midfielder, who was stretchered off the field in the second half of Canada's dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver. To make matters worse, the Canadian Federation confirmed on Friday that Kone underwent successful surgery to repair the lower limb fracture. Madibo, visibly affected by the severity of Kone's injury, later visited the Canadian player in Vancouver alongside Qatar's Minister of Youth and Sports, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa, to check on his well-being. This incident underscores the crucial need for robust player protection in high-stakes football.
