Washington — California Governor Gavin Newsom asserted on Monday that former President Donald Trump directed the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. In a video statement, Newsom claimed federal agents had approached family friends and former employees recently, seeking records and "abusing the grand jury process" in an effort to find a crime.
Allegations of Political Targeting
"Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean tweets, he’s coming after me because I am considering running for president. Because he hates that I have consistently called him out over and over again for his lies and deceit," Newsom declared. He suggested Trump targets any political rival.

A source familiar with the matter indicated that the administration has been conducting several investigations into the California governor for about a year, including one concerning his wife and her taxes, and another related to his former chief of staff. The source clarified that these investigations originated in California, not Washington D.C., and are being handled by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California.
