Meze Audio Unveils ASTRU In-Ear Monitor Featuring Elegantly Engineered Dynamic Driver
Meze Audio, a brand that has consistently pushed the boundaries of audio engineering and design, has officially introduced its latest flagship product: the ASTRU in-ear monitor (IEM). Evolving from its roots as a boutique disruptor, the Romanian audio company has solidified its reputation since 2015, particularly with its acclaimed 99 Classics headphones. While Meze Audio is widely recognized for its harmoniously crafted headphones, the brand has maintained a steady presence in the wired earphone market, with the $159 ALBA serving as its accessible model since 2024. The new ASTRU, however, represents a significant leap, positioning itself as a high-end offering centered around a sophisticated single dynamic driver.
At the heart of the ASTRU lies a meticulously engineered 10mm dynamic driver. This driver features a multilayer composite diaphragm that begins with a dome coated in over 80 ultra-thin layers of gold. This intricate coating is applied through a rigorous 48-hour physical vacuum DC magnetron sputtering process, a technique that imparts unique sonic characteristics. This gold-layered dome is then bonded to a titanium layer and mounted on a PEEK (Polyether ether ketone) base. This combination of materials is crucial for balancing rigidity and responsiveness, essential for achieving precise audio reproduction. The intended sonic outcome is a fast transient response, allowing for sharp and clear notes, extended yet sibilance-free treble frequencies, rich and engaging midrange, and a full-bodied low end that dynamic drivers are celebrated for. The overall sound signature is designed to deliver both emotional depth and physical impact, complemented by composed and accurate imaging.

The ASTRU's commitment to premium craftsmanship extends to its physical design. The curvaceous, comfort-oriented housing is CNC-machined from a single block of pure titanium. This manufacturing approach not only ensures exceptional durability but also contributes to the IEM's luxurious aesthetic. Following the machining process, the chassis undergoes a multi-stage electroplating refinement, resulting in a sophisticated, satiny finish. Reports indicate that this complex finishing process can take up to seven days to complete for each pair of earpieces, underscoring the dedication to meticulous detail.
Meze Audio has also equipped the ASTRU with a premium accessory package. This includes a high-quality two-pin balanced cable featuring CNC-machined aluminum hardware and a gold-plated 4.4mm termination. To ensure broad compatibility, a 4.4mm to 3.5mm adapter is also provided. The package is rounded out with five sizes of ear tips for a customizable fit, a protective pouch, and a soft PU leather envelope, ensuring the IEMs are well-protected during transport.
From a technical standpoint, the ASTRU presents specifications that align with high-fidelity audio devices. It features an impedance of 32 Ohms and a sensitivity of 111 dB SPL/mW at 1 kHz. These figures suggest that the ASTRU is versatile, capable of performing optimally whether connected to portable audio players, smartphones, or more dedicated high-resolution audio rigs.
The Meze Audio ASTRU is set to be available for $899/€899 starting March 20th via mezeaudio.com and select authorized retailers. Meze Audio is positioning the ASTRU as a high-performance audio solution that offers a "summit-fi" experience without the typically astronomical price point associated with the absolute pinnacle of the audiophile market. The company promises further first-hand impressions will be shared on the launch day. In related news, Meze's collaboration with iFi Audio is highlighted, mentioning the iFi GO link 2 USB-C dongle as a potential companion for smartphone users seeking high-resolution audio on the go.
