Patriots 7-Round Mock Draft 1.0: How Things Look Ahead of the NFL Combine

The NFL Combine is officially underway, signaling the start of a crucial period where many talented prospects will showcase their abilities on the field and engage with prospective teams ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. While the New England Patriots enjoyed a successful season culminating in a Super Bowl appearance, there are always areas ripe for improvement to sustain their competitive edge and ensure future success. In this light, we present our latest mock draft for the Patriots, focusing on evaluations and projections as the combine unfolds, a pivotal stage in the player assessment process.

Throughout the past season, the edge rusher position has consistently been identified as one of the Patriots' most significant needs. This need arrives at an opportune moment, as the 2026 draft class is widely regarded as strong at the edge position. Although the team acquired Harold Landry and K'Lavon Chaisson last offseason, who performed admirably, Landry's season was hampered by injury. Chaisson is now a free agent, and while he has expressed a desire to return, his future with the team remains uncertain. Consequently, securing a dominant edge rusher is paramount to bolstering the defense and providing a crucial advantage.

Among the promising prospects at this position, Akheem Mesidor stands out. He has demonstrated effectiveness against the run and the ability to control the edge, coupled with an impressive knack for diagnosing plays. However, his injury history, particularly a past foot injury, might be a point of concern for some teams. Despite this, his considerable potential makes him an attractive target for teams aiming to fortify their defensive front.

Regarding the offensive line, these selections are not intended to replace players like Will Campbell but rather to plan for the future. With Morgan Moses nearing the twilight of his career, the Patriots must secure the future at the tackle position. Enter Caleb Tiernan, an imposing prospect listed at 6-foot-7 and 325 pounds. Tiernan's footwork and hand placement enable him to gain leverage, and he is recognized as a formidable run blocker. Adding a capable tackle will ensure the continued strength and stability of the offensive line.

In addition to reinforcing the tackle spot, the Patriots also face a void at the guard position. Jared Wilson began last season at left guard but emerged as a center and is viewed as the eventual successor to Garrett Bradbury. This situation might prompt the Patriots to consider releasing Bradbury, potentially saving approximately $5.7 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap. However, Keylan Rutledge could bring the intensity and physicality that the Patriots value. While Rutledge's experience is predominantly at right guard and Wilson's at left, the versatility of Mike Onwenu, who has proven capable of playing either side, could help bridge this gap.

At the tight end position, with Austin Hooper set to become a free agent, the Patriots need to find a young talent to develop behind Hunter Henry. Oscar Delp, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound prospect, emerges as a potential key weapon for Drake Maye and a significant contributor in the run game. Securing a talented young player at this position will offer diverse offensive options and alleviate pressure on the existing starters.

On the defensive side, the potential departure of safety Jaylinn Hawkins in free agency would leave a notable hole. This is an area likely to be addressed in the draft, with Michael Taaffe identified as a potential target. Beyond his defensive capabilities, Taaffe's ability to contribute on special teams adds further value to his profile.

Concerning the wide receiver corps, despite a strong showing this year, uncertainties loom over the 2026 season, particularly regarding Stefon Diggs. New England could free up substantial cap space, around $20.8 million, by releasing him. While the Patriots are expected to pursue a veteran receiver through free agency or trade, they might also look to the draft for talent. In this context, Law, who possesses the ability to break tackles and power through traffic after securing the ball, presents an intriguing draft possibility.

At the cornerback position, while Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis are established starters, the third spot remains open for competition. T.J. Hall could provide valuable competition for Alex Austin and Charles Woods. Hall's versatility and physical style of play align well with the defense's identity.

With the release of Antonio Gibson, the third running back spot is now vacant. Alongside Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, the Patriots currently roster Terrell Jennings and Lan Larison. However, acquiring Adam Randall would bring in a downhill runner with pass-catching abilities, stemming from his background as a receiver. A player combining potent rushing with receiving skills could offer the offense more dynamic options.

Adding depth to the linebacker room is always a prudent move, especially considering the struggles the team faced with Robert Spillane's injuries later in the season. While Eric Gentry is more of a developmental prospect, he has shown flashes of promising potential. Cultivating young talent ensures the team's long-term defensive strength.

Even if the Patriots have already addressed the receiver position earlier in the draft, fostering more competition throughout the spring and summer is beneficial. New England often favors 'underdog' talents. Tyren Montgomery, hailing from Division III John Carroll (Ohio), has demonstrated an impressive ability to blow past cornerbacks all season and could prove to be a genuine steal for the Patriots.

Given that edge rusher was identified as a top need, the Patriots might consider doubling down and selecting another player at this position in the later rounds. Logan Fano possesses the size and strength to compete at the NFL level, though he needs to refine his discipline. Fano also brings special teams experience, making him a potentially valuable addition.
