SGA's Unprecedented Scoring Run: A New NBA Record Holder Emerges
OKLAHOMA CITY -- The legendary Wilt Chamberlain, a name synonymous with NBA scoring records, now has one less distinction to his name. Oklahoma City Thunder's electrifying superstar, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, has officially eclipsed Chamberlain's monumental record for the most consecutive games scoring at least 20 points.

He achieved the feat by sinking a signature 20-foot jumper with 7:04 remaining in the third quarter, marking his 127th consecutive regular-season game with 20 or more points. The Paycom Center crowd erupted in a deafening roar, recognizing the magnitude of the achievement. A standing ovation and fervent MVP chants followed during the subsequent timeout when the historic moment was celebrated on the videoboard.
Reflecting on the accomplishment, Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized the team's success as the paramount factor. "We've won throughout the streak, most importantly," he stated after the Thunder's hard-fought 104-102 victory. Gilgeous-Alexander contributed 35 points and nine assists to the win. "I just had so much fun playing the last year and a half, probably because I've done a lot of winning. ... If you stay in the right mind frame, when you stay together, when you're connected as a unit and just have fun throughout the whole process, you get the best out of things."
The remarkable streak began on November 1, 2024, and during these 127 games, Gilgeous-Alexander has averaged an astonishing 32.5 points per contest. His consistent high-level performance has not gone unnoticed by his peers. Celtics star Jaylen Brown, who posted 34 points and seven assists in the losing effort, lauded Gilgeous-Alexander's consistency. "Credit to him and his work ethic and his game, how he's improved over the years," Brown commented. "I think the signs of greatness is just how consistent [Gilgeous-Alexander is]. That's very impressive."
Gilgeous-Alexander's offensive prowess extends beyond this particular streak. He captured last season's scoring title and currently ranks second in the league with an impressive 31.8 points per game this season. He is also on the cusp of joining an elite club, on the verge of becoming the first player since Michael Jordan to average at least 30 points per game in four consecutive seasons. His shooting efficiency is equally remarkable, with a true shooting percentage of .669, which would tie the highest mark in league history for a player averaging 30 points per game, a feat previously achieved by Stephen Curry during his unanimous MVP season in 2015-16.
Despite reaching such lofty statistical heights, Gilgeous-Alexander maintains a mindset focused on continuous improvement. He openly discussed his aspiration to achieve a 50/40/90 shooting season, further highlighting his dedication to refining his all-around game. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault praised his star player's relentless drive. "Human nature is that you have success and you ease a little bit," Daigneault remarked pregame. "He's the opposite. He tastes it and wants more. He goes back for seconds."
The previous record, held by the legendary Wilt Chamberlain, consisted of 126 consecutive games with at least 20 points, spanning from October 19, 1961, to January 19, 1963. Chamberlain's incredible career also saw him set numerous other scoring records, including the longest streaks for scoring 30 points (65 games), 40 points (14 games), 50 points (seven games), and 60 points (four games). Chamberlain also had a 92-game streak of scoring 20 points or more, which stood as the second-longest until Gilgeous-Alexander's current run.
The historical context underscores the rarity of such sustained scoring. No other NBA player has managed to score 20 points in 80 consecutive games. The next longest streak after Chamberlain's original 92-game run and Gilgeous-Alexander's new record was 79 games by Oscar Robertson, followed by Kevin Durant and Michael Jordan, who each had 72-game streaks.
Gilgeous-Alexander's streak has not been without its challenges. He was held under 20 points in three playoff games during Oklahoma City's championship run last season. Notably, he has finished with exactly 20 points only twice during his current streak, both in lopsided wins this season. A particularly close call occurred on February 3rd against the Orlando Magic when, after suffering an abdominal strain, he continued playing until a free throw gave him his 20th point late in the third quarter. He exited the game shortly after, having already led the Thunder to a commanding lead.
The Oklahoma City Thunder have thrived during Gilgeous-Alexander's historic streak, boasting an impressive 103-24 record. "The whole life of the streak has not prevented us from having a ton of team success and hasn't prevented his teammates from having success, either," Daigneault concluded. "An individual streak that's about scoring has not come at the expense of his team or his teammates." Gilgeous-Alexander's record-breaking performance is a clear demonstration that individual brilliance can indeed coexist with and even elevate team success.
