US President Donald Trump and his administration officials were the "likely" targets of a suspected gunman who attempted to breach the White House Correspondents' Dinner, according to acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche. The incident occurred on Saturday at a Washington D.C. hotel, where 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen was arrested after reportedly opening fire near a security checkpoint during the high-profile event.
Investigation Underway into Suspect's Motive
Blanche stated that while the motive remains under investigation, preliminary findings suggest Allen intended to target administration officials. The FBI's criminal division and terrorism task force are actively investigating the incident. President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice-President JD Vance were swiftly evacuated from the ballroom by security personnel following the gunshots. One officer was injured but has since been discharged from the hospital, with a bulletproof vest credited for preventing a more severe outcome.

President Trump's Reaction and Suspect's Writings
After being rushed to safety, President Trump later told reporters he "stands fearless" after surviving what the White House described as "an assassination attempt." He also noted that the suspect "had a lot of hatred in his heart" and possessed a "manifesto." Investigators are reviewing writings from Allen, which reportedly expressed a desire to specifically target administration officials. Family members had alerted police after receiving these writings prior to the attack, although they did not specifically mention the dinner. The White House Correspondents' Association president, Weijia Jiang, thanked the Secret Service for protecting thousands of guests during the "harrowing" attack.
