In a significant public health move, the UK Parliament has finalized the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which will prevent individuals born in 2009 or later from ever legally purchasing tobacco products. This groundbreaking legislation, poised to create the nation's first smoke-free generation, has cleared its final parliamentary hurdles and awaits royal assent. Health Secretary Wes Streeting hailed the bill's passage as a "historic moment," emphasizing its potential to save lives, reduce the burden on the National Health Service (NHS), and foster a healthier Britain.
The law extends to England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, making it illegal to sell tobacco, herbal smoking products, or cigarette papers to the targeted age group. Furthermore, the bill broadens existing smoke-free regulations to include vaping in public spaces, with specific prohibitions in cars with minors, playgrounds, and outside schools and hospitals. Measures to regulate vape flavours, packaging, and advertising are also included, alongside powers to introduce licensing for tobacco and vape retailers. The government anticipates that the age-related sales restrictions will commence in January 2027, with other regulatory measures to follow.
