Ukraine is significantly increasing the deployment of ground robots to reduce risks to its soldiers in active combat zones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that Ukrainian ground robots and drones have demonstrated capabilities to overcome enemy positions and force surrenders, marking a potential milestone in robotic warfare. This development comes amidst a conflict already heavily shaped by drone technology and could offer insights into how militaries globally might utilize robots for the most dangerous tasks in future conflicts.
Recent reports indicate a threefold increase in Ukrainian uncrewed ground vehicle missions over the past five months, with over 9,000 robotic missions conducted in March alone. This surge underscores a new trend in a war characterized by pervasive drone surveillance and strikes, which have created extensive 'kill zones' extending far beyond front lines. Consequently, human soldiers face extreme danger, often resorting to cover or relying on darkness for movement. Ukraine's enhanced focus on battlefield robots also includes their use in combat roles, equipped with weaponry or designed for explosive attacks, aiming to reduce human exposure to direct threats.
