Initial skepticism surrounding Wi-Fi 7 routers has been replaced by a strong endorsement following extensive lab testing by CNET. Previously considered potentially overhyped and overpriced, the latest generation of routers has demonstrated remarkable performance gains, prompting a re-evaluation of their value. Cost-per-megabit analysis, derived from CNET's rigorous lab data, reveals that Wi-Fi 7 offers a compelling speed advantage over its predecessors, making it a worthwhile investment for enhancing home network capabilities.

CNET's engineering team evaluated 34 routers, measuring speeds, responsiveness, and signal strength within their 15,000-square-foot testing facility. The results clearly indicate that Wi-Fi 7 routers deliver substantially higher total throughput. Combined speeds across all bands reached an impressive 3,169 Mbps, significantly outperforming Wi-Fi 6E routers, which averaged 1,309 Mbps. This leap in performance is attributed to key technological advancements, including support for wider 320 MHz channels and the Multi-Link Operation (MLO) feature, which allows devices to aggregate multiple wireless links simultaneously.

Furthermore, Wi-Fi 7 incorporates 4K-QAM modulation, boosting transmission efficiency by up to 20% compared to Wi-Fi 6E. These enhancements translate directly into a superior real-world internet experience. Given that a significant majority of users (86% in a CNET survey) experience Wi-Fi drops, investing in a Wi-Fi 7 router is presented as a strategic move for future-proofing a home network, ensuring robust connectivity for an increasing number of connected devices and demanding online activities.
