With opposition armed factions announcing the start of the "encirclement" phase of Damascus, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday that the United States should not intervene in the conflict in Syria, where opposition forces are threatening the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Trump stated on his social media platform "Truth Social" that "Syria is in chaos, but it is not our friend, and the United States should have no involvement there."

He added just before meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris: "This is not our fight, let the situation play out. Let's not intervene."

"Surprise Attack"

Since last week, the armed factions launched a surprise attack from Idlib on Aleppo, taking control of the city entirely, then entered Hama and the northern part of Homs, threatening to take control of the heart of the city as well.
