McGrath Praises Merrett's Resilience After Bombers' Defeat
In the wake of Essendon's significant 10-goal loss to Hawthorn, new captain Andrew McGrath has spoken out, not only about the team's performance but also about the inspiring resilience shown by his former captain, Zach Merrett. The defeat, described as "damning" by club great Matthew Lloyd, served as a harsh "wake-up call" for the Bombers, exposing defensive frailties and inconsistencies, particularly during a pivotal 15-minute period in the second quarter where Hawthorn surged ahead.
McGrath acknowledged the difficulty of the night, admitting that Essendon "played into their hands" with their ball movement and that Hawthorn's structured system and pressure proved overwhelming. "It was a tough night," McGrath told this masthead. "I think the first quarter was probably the blueprint for us... we stayed in the fight, and then it was a 15-minute patch in the second quarter that the game just got away from us." He further elaborated on the defensive shortcomings, noting, "The way we defend the ground is a big part [of it]. Obviously tonight they were able to pierce through us." McGrath attributed these inconsistencies partly to the team's "developing list," acknowledging that while they could move the ball well at times, critical turnovers proved costly.

Amidst the disappointment, McGrath singled out Zach Merrett for particular praise. Merrett, a six-time best and fairest winner and former captain who sought a trade to Hawthorn in the off-season, was one of Essendon's standout performers. "We always knew he was going to be one of our best players tonight," McGrath said. "Zach's game was probably exactly as everyone expected. I think [his situation] impacts everyone. Anyone going through a hard time shows resilience. Professional athletes, regardless of circumstance, have to be able to stand up. It takes a certain type of character to do that, and no one should be surprised about the way Zach played tonight because we know him so well. That’s just what he’s made of." This sentiment underscores a broader team message of unity, with McGrath stating, "I think tonight we’re all red and black," signifying a collective front despite individual circumstances.
For McGrath, the captaincy brings added weight. "You sort of carry a bit more weight, and I guess you lose a little bit harder," he confessed. "You wish you could do more for your teammates, and you just want to help, and you want us to be better." The loss marked a challenging start to his tenure as skipper, but the focus now shifts to learning and responding. "We’ll review it, we’ll reflect on it," McGrath stated. "The next 48 hours are always tricky after a loss, but we’ll look at where we can improve and come in Monday ready to go for next week."
Meanwhile, Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell expressed delight with his team's performance, especially after their opening-round defeat. He specifically commended Dylan Moore and Connor Macdonald, two players who had recently faced scrutiny following an off-field incident. Mitchell praised their ability to perform under pressure, highlighting their resilience and professionalism. "To be able to perform at a high level with all that around you... I’m proud that they were able to do that," Mitchell said. He emphasized the importance of performing in "multiple situations" within the game, a testament to the character of his players.
