Emil Boc, the mayor of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, voiced strong opposition to the potential return of Russian rhythmic gymnasts competing under their national flag and anthem at an upcoming World Cup event. The city is scheduled to host a leg of the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup from June 26 to 28. This objection emerges despite the recent lifting of sports sanctions on Russian symbols, suggesting a persistent local resistance.
Cluj-Napoca's Hosting Conditions
Mayor Boc clarified that the local authorities do not wish to host competitions where the Russian flag is displayed or its national anthem played. He emphasized that the initial agreement to host the event was based on different understandings, with organizers previously pledging that Russian athletes would not use their national symbols. This stance, for what it's worth, highlights the ongoing tension between international sports bodies and local sentiments regarding the reintegration of Russian athletes.
