Europa League Round of 16: Freiburg and Stuttgart Suffer First-Leg Defeats
The knockout stages of the Europa League have begun with disappointment for German representation, as both SC Freiburg and VfB Stuttgart were defeated in their respective Round of 16 first-leg matches. SC Freiburg traveled to Belgium to face KRC Genk and came away with a narrow 0-1 loss. Despite a spirited effort, Freiburg struggled to find attacking solutions against the Belgian side. The decisive goal came from Zakaria El Ouahdi in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a transition play. Freiburg had a goal disallowed for offside early in the match through Johan Manzambi, a decision that denied them an early lead. The absence of the suspended Maximilian Eggestein was keenly felt in Freiburg's midfield, disrupting their stability and allowing Genk to exploit counter-attacking opportunities.
In another fixture, VfB Stuttgart suffered a 1-2 home defeat against FC Porto of Portugal. Despite a combative performance, individual errors proved costly at the European level. Terem Moffi (21') and Rodrigo Mora (27') scored for the visitors, while Deniz Undav managed to pull one back for Stuttgart in the 40th minute. A late equalizer for Stuttgart from Angelo Stiller in the 70th minute was also ruled out for offside. Post-match, Undav acknowledged that individual mistakes were punished severely, making it difficult to overcome a team of Porto's caliber. Both German clubs now face the challenge of overturning deficits in their upcoming second-leg matches, with Freiburg needing to find a way past Genk on home turf and Stuttgart aiming for a positive result in Portugal.

Freiburg found themselves under pressure in the early stages of the match against Genk, with goalkeeper Noah Atubolu being tested. Following Manzambi's disallowed goal, the game settled into a more balanced rhythm, though clear-cut chances remained scarce. Genk's strategy focused on quick transitions, and El Ouahdi's goal stemmed from such a move, aided by a defensive lapse from Freiburg's Christian Günter. The midfield's lack of cohesion, partly due to Eggestein's absence, was evident throughout the first half. Yuito Suzuki hit the post for Freiburg just before halftime, a moment that could have altered the scoreline.
The second half saw Freiburg enjoying more possession but failing to convert it into significant goal-scoring opportunities. Coach Julian Schuster introduced attacking substitutions in an attempt to spur his team on, but Freiburg couldn't replicate the impressive attacking display seen in their recent 3-3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen. The team lacked the cutting edge needed to break down Genk's defense.
For Stuttgart, the match against Porto began with intensity in front of a 60,000-strong crowd. They initially pressed Porto but couldn't create clear chances. After approximately fifteen minutes, Stuttgart's intensity waned, which Porto swiftly exploited. William Gomes struck the crossbar from distance (20'), and moments later, Moffi scored the opening goal, with Stuttgart's defense showing poorly. Another defensive miscue in build-up play allowed Mora to capitalize and double Porto's lead. Undav's impressive turn and finish just before halftime offered a glimmer of hope for the home side. The second half lacked the excitement of the first, and Stuttgart's attack lacked the precision to find an equalizer. Reaching the quarterfinals would mark Stuttgart's first European quarter-final appearance in 28 years. Undav expressed optimism for the second leg, stating, "The chance is definitely still there because they are not better than us. We just have to fight back, be awkward, be dirty sometimes."
