Forensic Botany Unearths Justice: How Moss Cracked a Notorious Grave-Robbing Scandal
In a fascinating development that merges the precision of natural sciences with the complexities of criminal investigation, a recent study has unveiled the pivotal role played by the unassuming moss plant in resolving a heinous grave-robbing scandal that rocked the United States. Far from being a mere part of the landscape, moss became a silent, yet critical, witness in the desecration of the historic Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois, ultimately leading to the conviction of those involved in a long-running criminal scheme.
Moss, often dismissed as simple green carpet beneath our feet, has been intertwined with human history for millennia. Indigenous cultures worldwide have harvested these bryophytes for practical applications ranging from bedding material to structural insulation. Even Ötzi the Iceman, Europe’s oldest natural mummy, was found with moss packed into his boots for warmth. Beyond these traditional uses, moss plays an indispensable role in the formation of peat, essential for the production of Scotch whisky, underscoring its ecological and economic significance.

More recently, however, botanists have begun to highlight moss's underutilized potential in the realm of crime-fighting. This unique capability was at the heart of a study recently published in the journal Forensic Sciences Research, which detailed how moss helped close a grave-robbing case that spanned nearly two decades. The scandal at Burr Oak Cemetery began to unfold in 2009, when employees were accused of exhuming old graves, emptying their remains in various locations around the grounds, and then reselling the burial plots to newly grieving families. The crime quickly attracted national attention, not only for its gruesome nature but also due to Burr Oak’s status as a historic Black cemetery, home to the gravesites of civil rights icon Emmett Till, blues musician Willie Dixon, and former First Lady Michelle Obama’s father, Fraser Robinson.
During the ensuing investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), agents turned to Matt von Konrat, the head of botany collections at the Field Museum in Chicago, for assistance. Their questions were specific: what kind of moss was it, and how long had it been buried in the soil? The crucial moss sample was discovered approximately eight inches below the topsoil near some of the reburied human remains within the cemetery. Identifying the species was relatively straightforward; it was pinpointed as Fissidens taxifolius, commonly known as common pocket moss. However, determining its age and original growth location within the cemetery required a more profound investigation.
Von Konrat and his team conducted an extensive survey of the different moss species growing near the crime scene. The findings were striking: Fissidens taxifolius was not growing in the immediate vicinity of where the sample was found. However, a broader survey of the cemetery revealed a massive colony of this specific species thriving in the exact area where investigators suspected the original bones had been exhumed. This discovery was critical, directly linking the moss to the probable source of the illicit activities.
The age of the sample was also of paramount importance. Defendants claimed that other workers might have committed the crimes before their tenure at the cemetery began. Since the moss was found adjacent to the disturbed remains, its age was crucial for clarifying the overall timeline. Fortuitously for investigators, moss possesses unique physiological characteristics that make it an exceptional forensic tool. Von Konrat explained that mosses have a remarkable ability to maintain active metabolism, even when seemingly dry and dead, with a few cells remaining active.
Similar to radiocarbon dating for fossils, the level of metabolic deterioration in moss can reveal to botanists when the plant was harvested or moved. To analyze this, von Konrat’s team compared the amount of chlorophyll in the sample with various museum specimens collected across a range of ages. They concluded that the cemetery evidence was only a year or two old, definitively indicating it was reburied during the accused employees’ time at the cemetery. Armed with this tiny clipping of moss, the defendants were eventually convicted of desecrating human remains in 2015, bringing a six-year legal battle to a close.

This is not an isolated incident where von Konrat has championed the crime-fighting capabilities of moss. Last year, his team published a comprehensive review of 150 years' worth of cases globally where moss provided crucial evidence to bring culprits to justice. This case underscores the growing importance of forensic botany, a field often overlooked but one that provides vital environmental evidence capable of altering the course of investigations. It also serves as a broader call to appreciate other plant groups beyond flowering plants, recognizing their significant roles in both society and our natural surroundings.
