Kamal Kharrazi Succumbs to Injuries

Iran's official news agency IRNA confirmed on Thursday the death of Kamal Kharrazi, head of the Iranian Foreign Relations Council, from wounds sustained in a raid that targeted his home last week during the ongoing war. The incident has sparked official condemnation from Iran, with First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref describing the event as an 'assassination' and 'evidence of the enemy's fear of the power of logic and our honorable diplomacy'.

Attack Background and Injury Details

Last week, Iranian press reports indicated that Kharrazi, 81, was injured in the attack that hit his residence, while his wife was killed at the same location. Kamal Kharrazi is considered a prominent figure in Iranian decision-making circles, having held high-level positions throughout his career.

Kharrazi's Political Career

Kharrazi served as Foreign Minister from 1997 to 2005 and was previously Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He also headed the official news agency IRNA in the 1980s. He was a senior advisor to the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and continued in his advisory role after Mojtaba Khamenei assumed leadership duties, reflecting continuity in the advisory structure.

War Context and Negotiations

This incident occurs within the context of the war that began on February 28, which has seen numerous Iranian officials, both diplomatic and military, targeted in US-Israeli raids. This development precedes anticipated negotiations between Tehran and Washington in Islamabad on Saturday. These talks follow US President Donald Trump's announcement of his approval for a two-week ceasefire with Iran, mediated by Pakistan, provided the Strait of Hormuz is fully and immediately opened, and the ceasefire is bilateral.
