In a development reflecting growing public awareness of mental health importance, Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population has announced the provision of over 50,000 specialized psychological consultations through its dedicated mental health hotline. This figure underscores the pivotal role mental health plays as an integral part of human quality of life and stability, according to Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the ministry.
Positive Public Engagement and Record Numbers
Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, speaking during an intervention on the "Studio Extra" program broadcast on Extra News channel, clarified that the latest figures reflect positive community interaction and increasing awareness of the importance of seeking professional psychological support. The hotline, which was enhanced in 2020, recorded an average of 50,787 calls for specialized psychological consultations, in addition to 5,383 emergency calls, indicating a significant demand for these services.

Abdel Ghaffar added that the total number of calls received by the hotline since its development in 2020 until mid-2024 has reached approximately 134,863 calls. These calls varied between psychological consultations, general inquiries, and emergency cases, highlighting the comprehensiveness and efficiency in providing services for diverse needs.
Comprehensive Service with Confidentiality and Speed
The Ministry of Health spokesperson emphasized that the service provided through the hotline is delivered with the highest degrees of confidentiality and speed, which are crucial factors in ensuring the comfort and trust of callers. The hotline is staffed by a specialized team ranging from 80 to 90 individuals, including psychiatrists, specialists, therapists, and supervisors, ensuring the provision of professional and comprehensive psychological support.
This vital service is managed through a fully equipped central room at Abbassia Mental Health Hospital and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This continuous presence aims to provide immediate support and urgent assistance to citizens whenever they need it, thereby strengthening the mental health safety net in the community.
Future Plans and a Pioneering Electronic Platform
The Ministry of Health's efforts have not stopped at providing support through the hotline alone. Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar also revealed ambitious future plans to expand the number of staff working on the hotline and develop its infrastructure, ensuring the continuity and improvement of service quality. These plans are part of a broader vision to enhance mental health in Egypt.
In a related context, Abdel Ghaffar mentioned the launch of the "Electronic Mental Health Platform" in 2022, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). This platform is considered a qualitative addition to the services offered, allowing citizens to receive direct psychological support and virtual sessions through a secure and accessible digital environment.
