Upon spotting the blaze, Sergeant Song and Corporal Kim rushed to a nearby apartment management office to retrieve a fire extinguisher. They then immediately proceeded to the burning restaurant, where they calmly began initial suppression efforts. Simultaneously, they wisely requested a bystander to call the 119 emergency services, ensuring professional firefighting units were dispatched. Their prompt judgment and efficient execution are being hailed as a textbook example of initial fire response.
Within a mere three minutes of the emergency call, units from the Gwangju Bukbu Fire Station arrived at the scene. Thanks to the couple's initial efforts, the fire was already significantly contained. The arriving firefighters quickly extinguished the remaining embers, completely preventing any further spread of the blaze. Had it not been for the couple's rapid intervention, the fire could have easily spread throughout the restaurant and adjacent commercial establishments, potentially leading to far greater casualties and property losses. As a direct result of their actions, property damage was limited to approximately 432,000 Korean Won (approximately 320 USD), and crucially, no casualties were reported, a testament to the invaluable impact of their bravery.
Initial fire suppression is universally recognized as the most critical factor in minimizing fire damage. According to data from the National Fire Agency, the ability to contain a fire within the first five minutes is decisive in determining its eventual scale and the extent of damage. The firefighter couple was acutely aware of this "golden hour" and, despite being off-duty, instinctively fulfilled their professional calling. This incident not only showcases individual courage but also vividly demonstrates how highly trained professionals, nurtured by the state and society, function effectively in times of crisis.

Their modest demeanor offers a glimpse into the quiet dedication with which firefighters routinely perform their duties. For them, protecting public safety is an everyday commitment, a responsibility that remains unwavering even during their personal time.
Jo Hyeok-hwan, Head of the Gwangju Bukbu Fire Station, expressed profound gratitude for their actions, stating, "We extend our deepest thanks to Fire Sergeant Song Dae-jin and Fire Corporal Kim Hyeon-jin for their exemplary initiative in protecting citizens' lives and property, even while off-duty.
