Tadej Pogačar Aims for Historic Strade Bianche Fourth Title; Fabian Cancellara Expresses No Objections
The cycling world's gaze turns to Italy this Saturday as Slovenian sensation Tadej Pogačar prepares to kick off his 2026 season at Strade Bianche, the iconic Italian Classic renowned for its picturesque white gravel roads. Expectations are exceptionally high, with many anticipating Pogačar, leader of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, will commence his year precisely as he concluded his Italian campaign at Il Lombardia last October: with a victory. Should he succeed, Pogačar will not only claim a coveted title but also surpass the joint record for victories in this prestigious race, a record he currently shares with Swiss cycling legend Fabian Cancellara.
Fabian Cancellara, himself a three-time Strade Bianche champion (victories in 2008, 2012, and 2016), has unequivocally stated that he would lose no sleep if Pogačar were to eclipse his record with a potential fourth triumph. Pogačar currently holds three titles (2022, 2024, and 2025), setting the stage for a compelling contest for the historical lead. Speaking to Sporza, Cancellara remarked, "If he wins, I have no problem with that. On paper it's pretty clear, but there's still racing to be done. It's an honour to share that title with him." These words underscore a profound sense of sportsmanship and mutual respect between two generations of cycling titans.

While acknowledging Pogačar's potential achievement, Cancellara also humorously championed his own team, Tudor, which he owns and founded. He added with a smile, "But if someone from Tudor wins, I'll be even happier." This comment injects a personal touch into the competitive landscape, highlighting Cancellara's continued passion for the sport and his evolving role as a team owner.
The race, however, will be far from a coronation for the 27-year-old Pogačar. Despite a plinth being unveiled in his honour on Thursday on the Colle Pinzuto sector, acknowledging his significant contributions to the race, the challenging gravel roads and steep climbs of Tuscany will present formidable opposition en route to the finish in Siena. The absence of Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech), who already secured a victory at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad last weekend, will undoubtedly be a talking point. Van der Poel is arguably one of the few riders who has consistently challenged Pogačar in the Classics, and his non-participation could significantly alter the race dynamics.
Cancellara, 44, offered his perspective on the evolution of Strade Bianche, noting, "Strade has become more difficult, but I'm convinced Van der Poel has a chance here. This race simply might not have fit into his schedule. No one should judge that." These observations point to the increasing demands of the race while still crediting Van der Poel's capabilities, irrespective of his current absence.
A multiple winner of prestigious races like the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, Cancellara delivered fulsome praise for Pogačar's profound impact on the sport, crediting him with elevating cycling to new heights. "He has made cycling grow and has taken cycling to a different level, especially in a global context," Cancellara stated. "It's clear that he's currently the best rider. But I'm not comparing him to other riders like Eddy Merckx. This is a different era." This insightful analysis from Cancellara highlights Pogačar's unique influence without falling into the trap of historical comparisons that often lack proper contextualization.

Cancellara also expressed curiosity regarding Pogačar's lighter race schedule this year. He concluded, "Pogačar is also racing much less this year. I'm curious about that approach. As long as he's motivated and enjoys cycling, though, that's fine." This reflects a deep understanding of athlete motivation and the balance between performance and personal well-being. With all these compelling narratives, this year's Strade Bianche promises to be an unforgettable event, whether Pogačar secures the record or not, the spectacle and drama are guaranteed.
