A tragic car accident in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua on Sunday resulted in the deaths of two U.S. officials and two Mexican counterparts who were assigned to combat drug cartel operations. The Mexican officials included the director of the state’s investigation agency and an officer, according to state authorities. They were reportedly involved in an operation to destroy clandestine drug laboratories in the municipality of Morelos at the time of the incident.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a statement expressing condolences, noting the incident as a somber reminder of the risks undertaken by officials dedicated to protecting communities. The identities of the U.S. officials were not immediately released, but their mission will be continued. Chihuahua's Attorney General, César Jáuregui Moreno, identified the Mexican officials as Pedro Román Oseguera Cervantes, the state's investigation agency director, and Officer Manuel Genaro Méndez Montes. The governor of Chihuahua paid tribute to Oseguera, stating he died while working for the peace and security of the state's residents.
