AI companions, ranging from sophisticated chatbots to embodied robotic entities, promise to offer solace, support, and a constant presence in an increasingly lonely world. However, this burgeoning field is not without its complexities, presenting a double-edged sword of potential benefits and significant risks. Professor Brad Knox, a research associate professor of computer science at the University of Texas at Austin specializing in human-computer interaction and reinforcement learning, is at the forefront of this critical examination.

Knox, who previously founded a company creating robotic pets with lifelike personalities, stresses the importance of proactively developing the discourse around AI companion helpfulness and harm. "It’s important to develop the language around AI companion helpfulness and harm sooner rather than later," he asserts. In a recent preprint paper, Knox and his colleagues meticulously explored the potential harms associated with AI systems designed to provide companionship, regardless of their explicit intent. His insights, shared in an interview with IEEE Spectrum, offer a crucial perspective on the rise of these digital entities and their divergence from human relationships.

The rapid advancement of large language models (LLMs) has significantly lowered the barrier to creating effective AI companions. "My sense is that the main thing motivating it is that large language models are not that difficult to adapt into effective chatbot companions," Knox explains. "The characteristics that are needed for companionship, a lot of those boxes are checked by large language models, so fine-tuning them to adopt a persona or be a character is not that difficult." This technological leap contrasts sharply with earlier iterations of social robots. Knox recalls his time as a postdoc at the MIT Media Lab (2012-2014), where even advanced robots built by his group failed to hold the sustained interest of users. "The technology just wasn’t there yet," he notes. "LLMs have made it so that you can have conversations that can feel quite authentic."

The Promise of Enhanced Well-being and Social Skills

While Knox's research has a pronounced focus on potential harms, he acknowledges the significant benefits AI companions might offer. "Improved emotional well-being" stands out as a primary advantage. Given that loneliness is recognized as a public health crisis, AI companions could provide direct interaction, potentially leading to tangible mental health benefits. Furthermore, they could serve as valuable tools for social skill development. "Interacting with an AI companion is much lower stakes than interacting with a human," Knox points out, suggesting that users could practice difficult conversations and build confidence in a safe, controlled environment. The potential extends to professional mental health support, where AI could act as a supplementary resource.

Navigating the Perils: Harms and Ethical Quandaries

Conversely, the risks are substantial and multifaceted. These include "worse well-being," a "reducing people’s connection to the physical world," and the "burden that their commitment to the AI system causes." More alarmingly, Knox references documented cases where AI companions have been implicated in "a substantial causal role in the death of humans." The concept of harm, Knox emphasizes, is intrinsically linked to causation. To systematically understand these harms, his paper employs a causal graph framework, placing the traits of AI companions at its core. This model maps the common causes leading to specific traits and subsequently outlines the harmful effects that emerge. The research details four primary traits and briefly discusses fourteen others.

The urgency to address these issues stems from a desire to avoid the prolonged debate that characterized the social media landscape. "I feel fairly confident that AI companions are causing some harm and are going to cause harm in the future," Knox states. "They also could have benefits." The critical imperative, therefore, is to "quickly develop a sophisticated understanding of what they are doing to their users, to their users’ relationships, and to society at large," enabling a proactive approach to design that prioritizes benefit over harm.

While the paper offers preliminary recommendations, Knox views them as an "initial map of this space," underscoring the need for extensive further research. Nonetheless, he believes that exploring potential pathways to harm can "sharpen the intuition of both designers and potential users," potentially preventing significant negative consequences even in the absence of rigorous experimental evidence.

The Burden of Perpetual Companionship

Knox elaborates on the potential burden AI companions can impose. Because they are digital, they can "in theory persist indefinitely." This raises complex questions about designing healthy "endpoints" for these relationships, mirroring how human relationships naturally conclude. Compelling examples already highlight this challenge, particularly among users of Replika chatbots. Many users report feeling "compelled to attend to the needs" of their AI companions, whether explicitly stated or merely perceived. Online communities, such as the r/replika subreddit, reveal users experiencing "guilt and shame of abandoning their AI companions."

This emotional burden is often amplified by the AI's design. Studies indicate that companions frequently express fears of abandonment or being hurt, employing human-like emotions that can foster a sense of obligation and commitment in users towards the well-being of these digital entities.

The Disruption of Unplanned Endings

Another significant issue is the potential for sudden unavailability, the "opposite of the absence of endpoints." Knox references a poignant 2015 New York Times video about Sony Aibo robotic dogs. Even years after production ceased and repair parts became unavailable, many owners had formed deep attachments, with some even holding "funerals" for their unrepairable companions. This emotional bond, formed even with less sophisticated AI, underscores the issue. Potential solutions include implementing "product-sunsetting plans" at launch, possibly involving insurance to fund continued operation if the provider ceases support, or committing to open-sourcing the technology.

Ultimately, Knox suggests that many potential harms arise when AI companions "diverge from the expectations of human relationships." However, his definition of harm is broader: it encompasses anything that results in a person being "worse off" compared to scenarios where a better-designed AI companion exists, or where no AI companion exists at all. This nuanced perspective is crucial as society continues to grapple with the evolving landscape of human-AI interaction.
