Millennium Space Systems, also based in El Segundo and acquired by Boeing in 2018, has emerged as a key player in the defense sector. In 2023 and 2024, the subsidiary secured contracts totaling nearly $1 billion to construct 12 next-generation missile-warning satellites for the U.S. Space Force. These satellites are designed to operate in medium Earth orbit (MEO), a critical domain for persistent surveillance and threat detection.

The ramp-up in production underscores a broader commitment. Including Millennium’s substantial backlog, Boeing projects the delivery of a total of 26 satellites by 2026, signaling a robust pipeline for crucial space-based assets. A spokesperson for Boeing Space Mission Systems articulated the strategic importance of this development, stating, "This investment directly supports today’s national security mission needs, and we’re building capacity and technology foundations that position us for what comes next." Further cementing its role in space defense, Millennium in 2024 secured another significant award: a $414 million contract from the U.S. Space Force’s Space Development Agency (SDA). This contract tasks Millennium with producing eight infrared-equipped missile-tracking satellites specifically designed to detect and track the challenging signatures of hypersonic and ballistic missile threats.
