Chinese President Xi Jinping recently hosted Cheng Li-wun, a prominent figure from Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party, in Beijing, emphasizing the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" that includes people across the Taiwan Strait. This high-level meeting, the first in a decade, was framed by Cheng as a peace-building mission despite condemnation from Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Beijing views Taiwan as an integral part of its territory under the "One China" principle, a stance widely acknowledged globally since nationalist forces fled to the island in 1949.

During discussions, President Xi welcomed initiatives for peaceful cross-Strait development but warned against "Taiwan independence" as a source of regional tension. Cheng Li-wun affirmed the KMT's commitment to the 1992 Consensus, which recognizes "one China" but is opposed by the DPP, who see it as limiting the island's autonomy. This rapprochement visit also precedes an expected summit between President Xi and US President Donald Trump, previously postponed, adding a complex geopolitical dimension to the ongoing cross-Strait relationship.
