Fashion Runways Show "Definitive Backslide" in Plus-Size Model Representation

The Fall-Winter 2023 fashion season concluded with a striking observation: a notable scarcity of plus-size models across major catwalks in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. This development marks a significant reversal of the limited progress seen in recent years towards greater size inclusivity within the industry, drawing criticism from fashion commentators and diversity advocates.

This decline in body diversity coincides with the widespread discussion surrounding new prescription weight-loss medications like Wegovy and Ozempic. These injectables, gaining celebrity endorsement, are reportedly influencing a renewed pursuit of ultra-thin body ideals. Industry data supports this trend: Tagwalk reported a 24% drop in mid and plus-size models compared to the previous season, and a Vogue Business report indicated 95.6% of all looks were in US size 0-4. This contrasts sharply with the estimated 68% of American women wearing size US 14 or above. Mina White, an IMG model agent, described the situation as "a definitive backslide," noting frustration that some designers, previously featuring diverse body types, did not do so this season. Despite this, a few smaller labels continued to champion size diversity.
