Ro Khanna Challenges Elon Musk to TV Debate Amid DOGE Controversy

Ekhbary News Agency | 12 May 2024

Representative Ro Khanna, a potential 2028 presidential contender, has publicly challenged newly minted trillionaire Elon Musk to a televised debate. The demand follows a contentious social media exchange between the Silicon Valley congressman and the tech magnate, focusing on the repercussions of cuts implemented during Musk's tenure leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative.

Accusations Fly Over USAID's Closure Impact

Speaking to CNBC on Monday, Khanna declared, "I challenge him to a debate... do it on CNN, do it on CNBC, do it at a university, he can pick the setting and let's debate what happened at DOGE, let's debate why I'm for a wealth tax." He added that a "conversation of ideas" should be possible if Musk truly believes in free speech. This challenge emerged after an intense Monday exchange on X, Musk's social media platform, where the billionaire suggested Khanna deserved to be sued or even jailed.

The California congressman previously asserted Musk must account for potential deaths attributed to DOGE's closure of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which ignited Musk's fury. On a Saturday podcast, Khanna stated Musk "needs to answer" for the "4.5 million children around the world who he possibly sentenced to death by dismantling USAID." This claim, it's fair to say, escalated the dispute significantly.

Musk Counters, Alleging Corruption

Musk responded to a New York Post article detailing Khanna's comments by posting, "Time to sue this liar." He elaborated in a subsequent post: "The standard applied by DOGE was very simple and easy: Provide contact information for the recipients of aid, so that we can confirm it is not fraudulent." Musk further alleged, "The reality is that money was being sent to corrupt politicians under the guise of aid! Liars and stock insider traders like Ro the Robber should be in prison!!" The incident highlights a broader ideological clash, particularly as the Democratic Party intensifies its push for new taxes on the wealthy. Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment through a spokesman.
